Resumption of Relations Between Saudi Arabia and Syria

Three informed sources told Reuters that Saudi Arabia and Syria have agreed to reopen their embassies after a decade of severed ties, a significant step indicating Damascus’s return to the group of Arab countries.

According to Reuters, a knowledgeable regional source aligned with Damascus said that after the agreement to restore relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran, a key ally of Bashar al-Assad, contacts between Riyadh and Damascus have increased.

The resumption of relations between Riyadh and Damascus is considered the most significant advancement so far in the rapprochement of Arab countries with the Assad regime. Many Western and Arab countries distanced themselves from Damascus after the start of the Syrian war in 2011.

The Saudi Kingdom and Iran, after severing their relations since 2016, agreed on March 10th to resume diplomatic relations and reopen their embassies, with China acting as a mediator, through a joint statement.
