Reuters: Signs of Progress in Secret Iran-U.S. Talks

Reuters notes signs of progress in secret Iran-U.S. talks

A source familiar with the mediation process between Tehran and Washington has reported advancements in behind-the-scenes discussions and suggested the possibility of signing a memorandum of understanding in the near future.

Reuters, citing a Pakistani source involved in the mediation between Iran and the United States, reported that secret talks between the two countries have led to progress. This source, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that the upcoming meeting might result in the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two countries, and subsequently, a comprehensive agreement could be formed within 60 days.

He also added that the two sides have reached an agreement in principle, and technical details will be reviewed later.

The dispute over Iran’s nuclear program remains one of the main topics of the negotiations. According to Reuters, in the latest round of talks, the United States proposed a 20-year halt to Iran’s nuclear activities, while Tehran proposed a halt of three to five years.

Meanwhile, Iran has called for the lifting of international sanctions, and in return, the U.S. emphasizes the transfer of Iran’s high-enriched uranium reserves. Two Iranian sources also told the news agency that signs of compromise on this issue are evident, and Tehran is considering transferring part of these reserves abroad.

On an official level, Donald Trump claimed on Thursday that Iran has agreed to hand over nuclear dust to the U.S. However, Mizan News Agency, affiliated with Iran’s judiciary, rejected this claim on Friday, stating that no negotiations have taken place regarding the transfer of Iran’s high-enriched uranium to the U.S., and naturally, no agreement exists in this regard.
