Reuters: The U.S. seeks an understanding rather than an agreement with Iran
According to Reuters, the U.S. government is in talks with Iran about steps to limit its nuclear program and the release of American citizens in exchange for the release of some of Iran’s frozen assets abroad.
The news agency, citing American and Western sources, stated that the aim of the talks is merely to reach some sort of understanding because any agreement with Iran requires the awareness and approval of Congress. Meanwhile, many members of Congress are strongly opposed to giving any concessions to Iran due to its assistance to Russia in the Ukraine war, internal repression, and support for proxy attacks on U.S. interests in the Middle East.
According to the report, the U.S. government, having failed to revive the JCPOA, currently hopes to at least compel Iran to accept some nuclear limitations.
