Russia Orders Closure of Polish Consulate in St. Petersburg

Russia orders the closure of the Polish consulate in St. Petersburg

On Thursday, December 6, Russia ordered the closure of the Polish consulate in St. Petersburg. This action was in response to Poland’s decision to close the Russian consulate in the city of Poznan in October. Poland had accused Russia of attempting to sabotage this country and its allies.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that, based on the principle of reciprocity, three diplomatic staff members of the Polish consulate in St. Petersburg were declared persona non grata, and this consulate must be closed by January 10, 2025.

Tensions between Russia and Poland, a NATO member, have increased since the deployment of Russian forces to Ukraine in February 2022, leading to the expulsion of dozens of diplomats by both countries.
