Russia warns about destroying Ukrainian fighter jets
Following the promise of two European countries to deliver Soviet-era fighter jets to Kyiv, the Kremlin spokesperson has threatened that Russia will destroy any fighter jets that Ukraine’s supporters deliver to the country.
Slovakia is the second NATO member country that committed on Friday, one day after Poland, to deliver a number of MiG-29 aircraft to Ukraine.
Last year, Slovakia decommissioned its fleet of MiG aircraft, and its military no longer uses this type of fighter jet.
The Ukrainian government has asked Western countries to provide it with modern aircraft like the F-16, but due to the lengthy training period required for these new types of aircraft, receiving and deploying them is a long-term option.
Until then, Soviet-made aircraft, which Ukrainian pilots have been trained to operate, will help Ukraine counter potential Russian attacks. Other NATO countries are considering delivering Soviet-era aircraft to Ukraine.
