Russia has withdrawn some of its diplomatic staff from Syria
A week after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that it has withdrawn some of its diplomatic staff from Syria
In a statement published on its Telegram channel, the ministry announced that on Sunday, December 16, a portion of the Russian diplomatic mission personnel, along with some staff from the Belarusian and North Korean embassies in Damascus, were evacuated from the country via a special Russian Air Force flight from the Hmeimim airbase in Syria
However, the statement clarified that the Russian embassy in Damascus will continue its operations
Earlier, based on satellite images, it was announced that Russia continues to withdraw some of its military equipment from the Hmeimim airbase in Syria
Satellite images from a few days earlier also showed that Russian military ships had left the Tartus base
In recent years, Russia has had a military presence in Syria to support the ousted President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, with about 7,500 troops in the country
