Russia has withdrawn some of its diplomatic staff from Syria

One week after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that it has withdrawn some of its diplomatic staff from Syria

In a statement published on its Telegram channel, the ministry announced that on Sunday, December 16, some of the staff of the Russian diplomatic mission, along with several employees of the Belarusian and North Korean embassies in Damascus, were evacuated from Syria on a special Russian Air Force flight from the Hmeimim airbase

However, the statement clarified that the Russian embassy in Damascus will continue its operations

Earlier, based on satellite images, it was announced that Russia continues to withdraw some of its military equipment from the Hmeimim airbase in Syria

Satellite images a few days earlier also showed that Russian military ships had left the Tartus base

In recent years, Russia has maintained a military presence in Syria to support the ousted President Bashar al-Assad’s government, with approximately 7,500 troops in the country
