Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson: Armenia's Inclination Towards NATO is Regrettable and Concerning

The Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson says Armenia’s inclination towards NATO is regrettable and concerning

Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said on Thursday that Armenia’s inclination towards NATO is regrettable and concerning, and that Yerevan’s actions risk wider instability in the South Caucasus region.

During a routine press conference at the ministry, she added that Armenia’s closer relations with the NATO alliance led by the United States not only will cause regret for Yerevan but will also create concerns for Armenia’s future.

Russia has warned about Yerevan’s increasing inclination towards the West, while Moscow has traditionally had significant influence in the South Caucasus.

In recent years, following the deterioration of Armenia-Russia relations, Yerevan has established warmer ties with the NATO alliance, especially since Armenian officials blame the Russian government for failing to protect the country against its long-standing rival Azerbaijan, which ultimately reclaimed the Nagorno-Karabakh region in September 2023.
