Some reports suggest the dismissal of Dr. Seyyed Sadegh Haghighat, a faculty member at Mofid University in Qom. He is a full professor in the Political Science Department at Mofid University and is associated with the field of religious intellectualism. His writings and candid, critical remarks in recent years have been noteworthy. In a television debate on Channel 4, he stated, ‘You cannot seek the people’s opinion for establishing a government, only to disregard them once in power and resort to violence if they oppose.’

Issuance of a deportation order from Canada

The reasons for his dismissal by the university president, Dr. Masoud Mousavi Ardabili, who is the son of Ayatollah Karim Mousavi Ardabili, have not been disclosed. Masoud Mousavi Ardabili has been the head of the Mofid Islamic Studies Center in Canada since 2013 and holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Ottawa. It seems he has been residing in Canada since 2001. In recent years, six faculty members from the Political Science Department at Mofid University, including Dr. Yousef Khan Mohammadi, the author of ‘Political Interpretation in Contemporary Iran,’ have been dismissed from this university.

It is said that the professors at this university have one-year contracts, and the sole decision-maker for renewing faculty contracts is the university president. So far, under the pretext of non-renewal of contracts, eight professors from this university have been dismissed.

A New Beginning

The start of university faculty dismissals began during Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s presidency, and during those years, many renowned professors were forced to leave their academic positions for unspecified reasons, making way for individuals with less impressive academic records. After that incident and its controversies, the dismissal of university professors was somewhat forgotten until the conservatives regained control of Azad University and the rise of the Raisi government, reigniting the issue. The dismissal of two prominent figures, Dr. Bijan Abdolkarimi from Azad University and Mohammad Fazeli from Shahid Beheshti University last year, are examples of this.
