Same-sex marriage has become legal in Greece

Same-sex marriage has been legalized in Greece. The Greek Parliament voted in favor of this measure with 176 votes in favor and 76 votes against. With this decision, Greece becomes the first majority Orthodox Christian country to legalize same-sex marriage.

Under this law, same-sex couples can now have children. 15 out of 27 European Union member states have legalized same-sex marriage. In total, 35 countries around the world allow such marriages.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the Prime Minister of Greece, has stated that the new law eliminates a serious inequality with courage. This controversial proposal faced strong resistance, led by the Orthodox Church. Supporters of the Church held a protest demonstration in Syntagma Square, Athens, on Friday.
