Same-Sex Marriage Legalized in Greece

Same-sex marriage became legal in Greece

Same-sex marriage has been legalized in Greece. The Greek parliament voted in favor of this bill with 176 votes for and 76 against. With the decision of the Greek parliament, it becomes the first country with a majority Orthodox Christian population to legalize same-sex marriage.

Based on this law, same-sex couples can now adopt children. Fifteen out of the 27 European Union member countries have legalized same-sex marriage. In total, 35 countries worldwide allow such marriages.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the Prime Minister of Greece, has stated that the new law boldly removes a serious inequality. This controversial bill faced strong resistance led by the Orthodox Church. Church supporters held a protest rally in Syntagma Square, Athens, on Thursday.
