Satellite images report a large oil spill near Kharg Island

Satellite images taken between May 6 and 8 (16 to 18 Ordibehesht) report a large oil spill near Kharg Island, the main oil export terminal of Iran. This oil slick, visible as a gray and white mass in Copernicus satellite images, covers an area approximately 45 to 95 square kilometers west of the island.

Louis Goddard from the analytical institute Data Desk has described this incident as possibly the largest oil spill since the start of the recent war. Leon Moreland, a researcher at the Conflict and Environment Observatory (CEOBS), also emphasized that the nature of the slick is entirely consistent with oil, although the exact origin and cause of the spill are still unknown.

Kharg Island, which is the center for exporting 90 percent of Iran’s oil, has been targeted by American forces during this war and is now under a severe naval blockade.
