Security Council Committee: Amir Khan Muttaqi may travel to Pakistan next week
According to Reuters, diplomats say a United Nations Security Council committee agreed on Monday that Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Foreign Minister of the Taliban government in Afghanistan, could travel to Pakistan next week to meet with the foreign ministers of Pakistan and China.
Under United Nations Security Council sanctions, Amir Khan Muttaqi has long been subject to a travel ban, asset freeze, and arms embargo.
According to the report, based on a letter from the Taliban Sanctions Committee of the Security Council, Pakistan’s representation at the United Nations requested an exemption for Mr. Muttaqi to travel to the country between May 6th and 9th to meet with the foreign ministers of Pakistan and China.
The report states that Chinese and Pakistani officials have previously said they welcome the inclusion of Taliban-led Afghanistan into the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.
Last month, the Security Council Committee also allowed Amir Khan Muttaqi to travel to Uzbekistan to participate in a meeting attended by representatives of Afghanistan’s neighboring countries. The topic of that meeting was peace, security, and stability.
