Sediqeh Vasmaghi’s Letter to the Leader of the Islamic Republic: You Bear the Responsibility for All the Consequences of Opposing Unveiling
Sediqeh Vasmaghi, a religious scholar, has written a letter to Ali Khamenei, the Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, asking him to explain on what definitive and irrefutable religious grounds and with what reasoning the strict model of the Islamic Republic for women’s dress is based, given that the Quran does not explicitly mandate covering women’s hair.
Ms. Vasmaghi, who has a background in Islamic jurisprudence and law, is a poet, political and civil activist, writer, and religious scholar. She is known as a religious reformist, especially through her publications such as ‘Women, Islamic Jurisprudence, the Capacity of Jurisprudence, and the Reinterpretation of Sharia,’ which focus her criticisms on Islamic jurisprudence, jurists, the inequalities in women’s rights, and monotheistic prophets.
Ali Khamenei, the Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, has declared the refusal to adhere to mandatory hijab as a religious and political sin.
