Ismael Haniyeh, 62, has been a prominent member of Hamas since the 1980s.
In 1989, during the first Palestinian uprising, Israel imprisoned Ismael Haniyeh for three years.
In 2006, after Hamas won the majority of seats in the elections, Ismael Haniyeh was appointed by Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian self-governing authority, as the Prime Minister.
He was ousted from this position a year later following the expulsion of Fatah party from Gaza by Hamas.
In 2017, he was elected as the head of Hamas’ political office.
He had been living in Qatar in recent years.
