Senior Hamas official: If a Palestinian state is established, we will lay down our weapons

A senior political official of Hamas told the Associated Press that the group is willing to agree to a five-year or longer ceasefire with Israel and will lay down its weapons and transform into a political party if an independent Palestinian state is created.

In an interview conducted on Wednesday with this news agency in Istanbul, Khalil al-Hayya also emphasized that Hamas is ready to join the Palestine Liberation Organization to form a unified government for Gaza and the West Bank.
