Signing of Defense Pact between the Philippines and Japan

The Philippines and Japan signed a defense agreement in Manila on Tuesday, July 8, in response to China’s claim in the South China Sea. According to this agreement, armed forces are authorized to deploy forces in each other’s territory.

Philippine Foreign Minister Enrique Manalo stated that Japan supports the Philippines in the dispute over sovereignty of certain islands.

Japan has also expressed readiness to provide radar systems for monitoring the coasts to the Philippines. Japan itself makes no claims regarding the South China Sea but has disputes with China over rights in the East China Sea.
