South Africa says the United Arab Emirates has rejected the request to extradite two businessman brothers accused of corruption.
South Africa says the United Arab Emirates has rejected the extradition request for the Gupta brothers, fugitive businessmen accused of money laundering and corruption. Ronald Lamola, South Africa’s Minister of Justice, says he is shocked and disappointed by this decision.
He said South Africa will appeal the decision. Atul and Rajesh Gupta are accused of paying bribes to secure lucrative government contracts and influence appointments in ministries during Jacob Zuma’s presidency.
Mr. Zuma resigned five years ago due to allegations of systematic corruption. Mr. Zuma, 79, is the first president in South Africa’s history to be sentenced to prison and incarcerated.
He was one of Nelson Mandela’s comrades in the fight against the apartheid regime in South Africa. The brothers fled to Dubai but were arrested last year. Mr. Zuma and the Gupta brothers have denied any wrongdoing.
