Sweden reports an increase in GPS disruptions, identifying Russia as the cause.
Sweden has accused Russia of causing disruptions to the Global Positioning System (GPS) in the airspace over the Baltic Sea.
According to the Swedish Transport Agency, reports of GPS disruptions have been increasing in recent years, but it has now become almost a daily occurrence.
This government agency overseeing transport affairs in Sweden states that it has recorded 733 reports of navigation system disruptions this year, while in 2023, there were only 55 such reports.
Sweden said that by tracing the source of the disruptions, it discovered that they originated from Russian territory. Other European countries in the Baltic Sea region had previously made similar accusations against Russia.
This report was released after an incident on August 31st, when a plane carrying Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, was forced to make an emergency landing at Plovdiv Airport in Bulgaria due to navigation system disruptions. The pilots had to use paper maps for landing.
