The Syrian Foreign Minister: We are not currently seeking to improve relations with Iran
Assad Hassan Sheibani, the Syrian Foreign Minister, announced that Damascus is not currently seeking to improve relations with Iran and considers any dialogue conditional on a change in the Islamic Republic’s policy towards Syria.
During his visit to Islamabad, Sheibani said that the issue of Pakistan mediating between Tehran and Damascus has not been raised and added that if Iran stops what it has been doing against the Syrian people over the past 14 years, the possibility for dialogue will exist.
He also mentioned that if a visit to Iran is in Syria’s interest, Damascus sees no obstacle to such a visit.
Relations between Tehran and Damascus have significantly decreased following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government in December 2024. During Assad’s era, Iran was one of the main political and military supporters of the Syrian government.
The Syrian Foreign Minister also reported on the consideration of Damascus joining the joint defense pact of Mecca between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, stating that a final decision has not yet been made in this regard.
