On Sunday, December 8, Syrian refugees residing in Turkey celebrated the fall of Bashar al-Assad. They gathered in front of the Fatih Mosque in Istanbul and raised the flags of the Syrian opposition.
According to the German news agency, reports have also emerged of celebrations in the southern city of Gaziantep near the Syrian border.
According to UN statistics, Turkey has accepted about 3 million Syrian refugees, more than any other country. It is said that most of these refugees have come to Turkey from Aleppo, Syria’s second-largest city.
Since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011, many Syrian children have been born in Turkey and have never seen their homeland. According to Turkey’s Interior Ministry statistics, about 240,000 Syrians have received Turkish citizenship so far.
