The Attorney General of the Taliban has traveled to Tehran at the head of a delegation to discuss the situation of Afghan prisoners with Iranian officials.
Shamsuddin Shariati, the Attorney General of the Taliban, has headed to Tehran today at the head of a delegation to investigate the situation of Afghan prisoners in Iran and their transfer process. The delegation includes the head of the Taliban’s general prisons and the head of consular affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The exact number of Afghan prisoners in Iranian prisons has not been officially announced. According to unofficial statistics, thousands of migrants and individuals charged with drug trafficking are in Iranian prisons, and some of them have been sentenced to death.
This comes as Tehran has recently agreed to hand over its embassy and consulates to Taliban diplomats, and according to reports, the Taliban is set to officially take over the representation of Afghanistan in Tehran on Monday.
