Tehran City Council Member: Participation in Tehran Was Not a Satisfactory Number
The head of the Tehran City Council’s Oversight and Legal Committee unfortunately stated that participation in the Tehran constituency was not a satisfactory number, and we should not close our eyes to the reality that a large portion of Tehran’s citizens did not participate in the elections for various reasons. The consequence of this lack of participation by Tehran’s citizens was that it led to a decrease in the overall national participation number.
He mentioned that Tehran and Alborz were two provinces where their level of participation caused a reduction in the overall participation rate, adding that if the representatives of the twelfth parliament, who are today’s elected officials, do not pay attention to this, they might not understand the message of non-participation from some citizens.
He emphasized that the electoral structure in the Tehran constituency and other large constituencies is an unjust structure. In most constituencies, citizens usually choose between one to two people, but in Tehran, Rey, Shemiranat, and Pardis, 30 people must be chosen, and this is based on population distribution. Does it equate to justice that in another city, one person has to choose one person, while in Tehran, one person has to choose 30 people?
