Tehran City Council Spokesperson: Transgender Citizens Should Not Be Present at Vali Asr Intersection

The spokesperson for the Tehran City Council stated that transgender citizens should not be present at Vali Asr Square.

The spokesperson for the Tehran City Council says that transgender citizens should not be present at the country’s busiest intersection, Vali Asr Square.

Alireza Nadali said on Monday, March 4th, during a press conference, that the Tehran City Council does not want to ignore the issue and mentioned that a space should be designated for the presence of trans individuals.

Daneshjoo Park and the theater area of Tehran, located near Vali Asr Square, are not only considered one of the busiest and most important places in the capital of Iran but have also been the site of many protests against the Islamic Republic over the decades.

The spokesperson for the Tehran City Council has officially spoken against transgender citizens and members of the LGBTQ community in Iran, despite the fact that under the Islamic Republic’s criminal laws, any form of same-sex relationship is considered a crime and carries punishments ranging from flogging to execution.

In his previous remarks on February 21st of this year, he also described transgender citizens as having special physical and mental conditions and stated that it is unacceptable for the most culturally significant part of the city to be their gathering place.
