Tehran University Professor Defends Government Policy on Flour and Bread

Defense by a Tehran University professor of the government’s policy on flour and bread

Kiumars Eshterian, a political science professor at Tehran University, defended the government’s approach to flour and bread in an article in the Shargh newspaper. In the first part of his article, he wrote:

The Minister of Economy stated that we now know where and how much bread each person buys. This comment, due to poor presentation, faced negative reactions in the media, and the positive aspect of this policy, which is the fight against extensive corruption and favoritism resulting from the management of the country’s flour and bread, was overlooked. However, the more important aspect of this policy is that if successful, this plan can serve as a model for the political system and policy-making. When the government can calculate the amount of bread people consume, it naturally leads to the expectation that everything should be accountable, including the accounting for embezzlement, corruption, and misuse of public funds.
