The Attorney General: Poppy Cultivation is Legally Prohibited in Iran

The Attorney General of the country: Poppy cultivation in Iran is prohibited by law

According to Mizan News Agency, affiliated with the Judiciary, Attorney General Mohammad Mohebi announced that poppy cultivation in Iran is prohibited by law, and necessary supervision in this regard must be carried out.

The issue of poppy cultivation for medicinal purposes had been raised in the government and parliament some time ago.

Mohammad Tarhomi, Director General of Legal and Parliamentary Affairs of the Drug Control Headquarters, said in a television program that with the request of the Ministry of Health and the permission of the Ministry of Agriculture, the cultivation of a type of poppy in enclosed lands for medical purposes is permissible.

He added that this plant does not have the capability for opium extraction and is solely for medicinal use.

Tarhomi also reminded that in the Anti-Narcotics Law, the cultivation of poppy and coca is absolutely prohibited.

Previously, the government and parliament were considering a plan to legalize the cultivation of a type of poppy for medicinal purposes, and discussions had taken place in this regard.
