The European Union strongly condemned the execution of Alireza Akbari

The European Union has strongly condemned the execution of Alireza Akbari, a former diplomat of the Islamic Republic and an Iranian-British citizen, reiterating its strong opposition to the death penalty under any circumstances.

In a statement released today, January 15th, the European Union also expressed sympathy to Mr. Akbari’s family and declared its full solidarity with the United Kingdom.

The statement also mentioned that the death penalty violates the fundamental right to life as referenced in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and is the ultimate cruel and inhumane punishment.

The European Union has also called on Iran to refrain from any future executions and to pursue a consistent policy towards the abolition of the death penalty. The execution of Alireza Akbari yesterday has sparked reactions from several countries.
