The Godfather at the Final Station: According to Iran Gate, Matteo Messina Denaro, after thirty years on the run, was arrested yesterday, January 16th, in a private clinic in the city of Palermo while he was in line for a COVID test. He was born on April 26, 1962, and is the son of Francesco Messina Denaro, the head of the Castelvetrano mafia group.
His fate, due to his family background, leads him to play a significant role in the Cosa Nostra mafia group. At the age of 14, he knows how to handle weapons well, and at 18, he commits his first murder. He tells a friend, ‘With the people I’ve killed, I could build a cemetery.’
Murders and Crimes of Matteo Messina Denaro
He was sentenced to life imprisonment twice in the past during two separate trials. In the year 2000, in the Omega trial, due to his significant role in the bombings and massacres of 1993 in Rome, Florence, and Milan, and later in 2020, as the instigator of the Capaci massacre and Via D’Amelio against Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, and the kidnapping of Giuseppe Di Matteo, the son of a former mafia member who expressed regret and remorse for his past and cooperated with the police.
1. Bloody Conflict between the Accardo and Ingolia Groups of Partanna
The first complaint against him occurred when Matteo Messina was 27 years old. In 1989, he was involved in a conflict between two mafia groups, Accardo and Ingolia of Partanna, and was thus convicted of association with the mafia. In 1991, he was identified as responsible for the murder of Nicola Consales, a hotel owner in Triscina. The reason for Consales’ murder was reported to be his complaint against his Austrian employee, who happened to be the lover of the city’s mafia boss.
2. Murder of the Alcamo Boss and His Fiancée
In July 1992, he was one of the perpetrators of the murder of Vincenzo Milazzo, the head of the Alcamo gang. A few days later, he strangled Antonella Bonomo, Milazzo’s fiancée, who was three months pregnant.
3. Escape and Life Imprisonment Sentence

In 1993, when he began to hide and flee, an arrest warrant was issued for him on charges of mafia association, murder, massacre, destruction, possession and carrying of explosives, theft, and other minor crimes. In 2000, he was sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment in court.
4. Giuseppe Di Matteo, the Child Dissolved in Acid
Matteo Messina Denaro was one of the instigators and organizers of the kidnapping of Giuseppe Di Matteo to force his father, Santino, to retract his revelations and confessions about the Capaci massacre. After 779 days of captivity, the child was strangled by Messina’s men, and his body was dissolved in acid. In 1994, Messina Denaro orchestrated a bombing against Totuccio Contorno, a former mafia member who had expressed remorse for his past.
5. The Massacres
On October 21, 2020, he was sentenced to life imprisonment by a court in Sicily due to Messina Denaro’s significant role as one of the instigators of the Capaci crimes, a terrorist attack carried out by the Italian mafia on May 23, 1992, in the city of Capaci, located on the island of Sicily, Italy. Following this terrorist attack, Judge Giovanni Falcone, his family, and several police officers were killed, as well as the Via D’Amelio bombing, another terrorist attack by the Sicilian mafia, which occurred in Palermo, Sicily, Italy, on July 19, 1992.
