The head of the Environmental Protection Organization: We are pursuing the Hirmand water rights in the new year

Ali Salajegheh, the head of Iran’s Environmental Protection Organization, has stated that pursuing Iran’s water rights from the Hirmand River is among the main plans of this organization for the new year.

Iran and Afghanistan have disputes over the water rights of this river.

The two countries signed a treaty in 1972 for the use of Hirmand’s water, which specifies the annual amount of water that flows from the Hirmand River into Iran. However, Iran is not satisfied with the amount of water that enters the country and considers it inadequate.

Mr. Salajegheh told ISNA news agency that even if Afghanistan announces tomorrow that we should go there for a meeting, we will certainly take action.
