Iranian coach shines in Qatari football

Pouya Asbaghi was named the best coach of February and March 2024 in the Qatar Stars League. The 38-year-old Iranian coach, born in Karaj, leads the Al-Shamal club, which also has Omid Ebrahimi on its roster.

He told Aftonbladet, ‘I am aware of what is happening in Iran. My parents have a political background. They fled Iran not only because of the war but also due to political persecution. My father is a defender of freedom and opposes the ruling regime in Iran. My wish is to travel to Iran one day without any obstacles.’

Gothenburg and Sweden’s under-21 national team, as well as England’s Barnsley, are among the teams Asbaghi has managed. Before moving to Qatar, he was the assistant coach of Red Star Belgrade and won the Serbian league and cup with the team.
