The last obstacle for Sweden’s NATO membership has been removed
Hungary was the last of the 31 NATO member countries to approve Sweden’s membership after months of hesitation by the ruling Fidesz party, leaving no further obstacles for Stockholm to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. On Monday, the Hungarian parliament agreed with a majority vote to Sweden’s membership in NATO.
Earlier, a senior member of the ruling party had stated that the parliamentary vote in Hungary on Sweden’s NATO membership would take place on Monday, ending Budapest’s more than 18-month delay in this matter and the disappointment of its Western allies.
After delaying the approval of Sweden’s membership and blocking key European Union decisions, including creating obstacles for financial aid to Ukraine, the Hungarian government faced increasing pressure from its allies.
