The Minister of Communications is not in favor of unblocking Telegram and WhatsApp

The Minister of Communications disagrees with unblocking Telegram and WhatsApp.

Isa Zarepour, the Minister of Communications, after the Eid al-Fitr prayer in Tehran, while speaking with a number of people, said regarding unblocking that the decision is not within his domain. This issue depends on various conditions, and we are focused on empowering domestic companies in the virtual space sector.

In response to the question of whether, if the decision to unblock Telegram, WhatsApp, and Instagram were up to him, he would agree to unblocking today, he said, ‘No, I do not agree.’

In this street conversation after the prayer, some young people criticized that with Instagram being blocked, their access to this social network is cut off and they cannot pursue the explanatory jihad desired by the Supreme Leader. As a result, the atmosphere on Instagram has become advantageous for the opposing side, and a revolution has happened on Instagram.

Another individual also criticized why the Ministry of Communications does not block all VPNs. He replied that if this were done, it would create disruptions in the country’s internet.
