The New York Times reported that Alireza Akbari had exposed the Fordow nuclear facility.
In September 2019, The New York Times reported that the source who revealed the Fordow nuclear site was a British spy.
According to three Western intelligence and national security officials, the information about the Fordow site was just one of the pieces of intelligence Akbari provided, which the British intelligence official transferred to his Israeli and Western counterparts in April 2008. Mr. Akbari’s motive for espionage is unclear.
The report continues, stating that according to intelligence officials, this spy provided them with valuable information and continued this work for years.
This information played a vital role in eliminating any doubts Western governments had about Iran’s intentions to acquire nuclear weapons and in encouraging the world to impose extensive sanctions against Tehran.
The identity of this spy remained hidden for a long time, but the execution of Alireza Akbari, the former deputy defense minister in Iran, on January 11 for espionage revealed a secret that had been hidden for 15 years. Mr. Akbari was the same British spy.
