The President of Lebanon Signed a Border Agreement with Israel

The President of Lebanon signed the border agreement with Israel

Michel Aoun, the President of Lebanon, signed an important agreement on Thursday, brokered by the US, to delineate the maritime borders of the country with Israel.

Israel is also expected to sign the agreement, which marks a mild shift away from hostility between the parties, in the coming hours. The agreement paves the way for energy exploration in the offshore areas of both countries and removes a potential source of conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, and could help alleviate Lebanon’s economic crisis.

Elias Bou Saab, the Lebanese negotiator, said that this agreement marks the beginning of a new era, and the signed text of the agreement will be handed over to American officials late Thursday at the southernmost border point of Lebanon in Naqoura.
