The Sentence of Mohammad Mehdi Karami Confirmed: Will We Witness the Execution of Another Athlete?

The sentence of Mohammad Mehdi Karami has been confirmed; we will witness the execution of another athlete.

While news sources report the overturning of the sentence for Hamid Gharehhasanlou and two other defendants, it is simultaneously reported that the death sentences for two other defendants in the Ruhollah Ajamian case, Mohammad Mehdi Karami and Mohammad Hosseini, have been confirmed.

Mohammad Mehdi Karami is one of the five individuals sentenced to death since the start of the show trials for the killing of a Basij member on the fortieth day of Hadis Najafi’s death in Karaj. This case involves fifteen defendants, most of whom are facing death sentences, including three teenagers under 18.

In the protests following the death of Mahsa Amini, two people have been executed so far: Mohsen Shekari and Majidreza Rahnavard, both of whom were athletes.

Mohammad Mehdi Karami has a history as a karate champion of Iran. Clémentine Autain, a member of the French Parliament, and Ardalan Shekarabi, a member of the Swedish Parliament, are political sponsors of Mohammad Mehdi Karami.
