The coalition of six opposition parties against Erdoğan has collapsed
In about two months, parliamentary and presidential elections are set to begin in Turkey, and the coalition of six parties opposing Erdoğan’s government has fallen apart. Meral Akşener, the leader of the nationalist IYI Party, said on Turkish television that the coalition of six can no longer reflect the will of the people in its decisions.
According to surveys, the IYI Party, as the second strongest group in the opposition coalition, intended to nominate a joint candidate based on the results of public opinion polls.
After a meeting with her party’s representatives, Akşener explained that her proposed candidates, Ekrem İmamoğlu, the mayor of Istanbul, and Mansur Yavaş, the mayor of Ankara, both from the Republican People’s Party, were rejected by other members of the coalition.
The leader of the IYI Party of Turkey added that instead of her party’s proposal, they wanted to choose Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, the head of the Republican People’s Party, the largest opposition party, who was favored by the other coalition partners.
Akşener emphasized that her party will not surrender to the demands of the other coalition members.
