The United States sanctioned the Islamic Republic’s maritime transportation network
The U.S. Treasury Department announced on Thursday the imposition of new sanctions against the Islamic Republic aimed at countering Tehran’s efforts to circumvent Washington’s sanctions, stating that it has added 13 shipping companies and eight oil tankers associated with the Islamic Republic to its sanctions list.
Among the individuals placed on the new U.S. Treasury Department sanctions list is a Greek citizen named Antonios Margaritis, who, along with several shipping companies in Hong Kong, the UAE, the Marshall Islands, and the UK, has been added to Iran’s sanctions list.
Scott Bassett, the U.S. Treasury Secretary, said on Thursday, August 20, that action against Margaritis and his network reduces Tehran’s ability to finance its advanced weapons programs, support terrorist groups, and threaten the security of our forces and allies.
Scott Bassett emphasized that under President Trump’s leadership, the Treasury Department remains determined to hold accountable all those seeking to aid the Iranian regime and threaten global security.
These sanctions include the freezing of assets and a ban on any transactions with U.S. persons and entities.
Earlier, the UK also announced on Thursday new sanctions against the Islamic Republic, adding Hossein Shamhani and four companies associated with him to its sanctions list.
