The US targets India with heavy tariffs due to its relations with Russia
Donald Trump, the President of the United States, announced on Wednesday in a message on the social network Truth Social that India will be subject to a 25% tariff starting Friday, with additional penalties also being imposed.
In this message, Trump wrote that although India is considered a friend of America, trade between the two countries has always been limited due to very high tariffs and strict non-financial trade barriers. He described India’s tariffs as among the highest in the world.
The US President also emphasized that India purchases a significant portion of its military equipment from Russia and, alongside China, is one of the biggest buyers of Russian energy, at a time when, according to him, everyone wants Russia to stop the killings in Ukraine.
Trump added that these are not all good points and emphasized that the new tariff will be imposed as a penalty for these behaviors.
