The water volume of Karaj Dam has dropped by more than 40% compared to last year.
A collection of photos by Mohammad Mehdi Pourarab, published by IRNA news agency, provides an unprecedented comparative analysis of the state of Karaj Dam. These images show that the current condition of this dam is even more critical compared to 2022, one of the driest recorded periods in the last decade.
This year, the decline in inflow volume and the rate of reservoir depletion have been reported as significantly higher, and experts warn that if this trend continues, it could surpass the drought records of previous years and pose a serious challenge to the water supply of the capital.
Karaj Dam, which is one of the main sources of drinking water for Tehran, is now facing an unprecedented reduction in water reserves.
According to the latest reports, the water volume of this dam, which supplies the water needs of nearly five million people in Tehran province, has decreased by more than 40% compared to the same period last year. The ongoing drought, noticeable reduction in rainfall, and increased withdrawals have led the dam’s inflow to reach the lowest level in the past 10 years.
