The White House: Russia is developing anti-satellite capabilities

The White House confirmed on Thursday that the national security threat raised on Wednesday by the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee is related to Russia’s development of anti-satellite capabilities.

On Wednesday, Mike Turner, a Republican member of the U.S. House Intelligence Committee, issued an unusual statement warning of a serious national security threat.

John Kirby, the White House National Security Council’s Strategic Communications Coordinator, said on Thursday that this is not an active capability that has been deployed. He added, noting that this is not an immediate threat to security, however, Russia’s pursuit of this specific capability is concerning.

Mr. Kirby added, we are not talking about a weapon that can be used to attack humans or cause physical destruction here on Earth.
