According to Iran Gate News Agency, coinciding with the 80th General Assembly of the United Nations, Donald Trump, the President of the United States, delivered his first speech in his second term. A speech that, instead of focusing on global crises, had the flavor of domestic American competition and showed that in Trump’s view, foreign policy remains a tool to strengthen his domestic voter base.

Focus on Domestic Achievements on a Global Platform

The United Nations or Trump's Campaign Headquarters

Trump’s speech at the UN headquarters, contrary to expectations for presenting a multilateral vision, resembled more a report on his administration’s domestic record. The President of the United States emphasized economic achievements, tax cuts, stock market growth, and controlling inflation, attempting to present a picture of America’s golden age. A picture intended more for domestic public opinion and especially Republican voters than for a global audience.

In another part, Trump once again defended his administration’s strict immigration policies and, referring to the elimination of illegal immigration, considered this achievement a sign of America’s national power.

Although many analysts believe that such topics have no place in the UN General Assembly and in practice, this approach is more for electoral consumption.

Foreign Policy in the Shadow of Domestic Competition

Although parts of Trump’s speech were dedicated to international issues, these statements were also presented within a promotional framework.

He referred to ending endless wars and bringing military forces back home, repeating one of his popular promises without offering a specific plan to resolve crises like the war in Ukraine or the situation in the Gaza Strip.

Harsh remarks against Iran were also part of this speech. Trump claimed that the United States has the ability to destroy Iran’s nuclear facilities but did not mention his foreign policy failures in containing Tehran’s nuclear program or ending Middle Eastern conflicts.

Many observers believe that the use of threatening rhetoric towards Iran and emphasis on America’s military power was more an attempt to display authority and strengthen his leadership image among conservative voters than to indicate a clear strategy in foreign policy.

Multilateral Diplomacy or Unilateral Promotion

Criticisms of Trump’s speech at the United Nations are primarily directed at the nature of his use of this international platform.

While it was expected that the U.S. President would speak about global cooperation, addressing climate change, security tensions, and economic disparities, he once again pursued a self-centered path where domestic interests take precedence over global responsibilities.

This trend is a continuation of the same perspective seen in Trump’s first term, a perspective that defines the United Nations not as an institution for resolving shared crises but as a platform to promote America’s national power.

The UN Platform as a Tool for Consolidating Domestic Power

Trump’s first speech in his second presidential term once again showed that he has not abandoned his electoral view of global politics.

From the economy to border security and foreign policy, all the points raised in his speech were designed to garner support from domestic voters.

While the world faces complex crises such as war, poverty, climate change, and the multipolarization of international order, Trump once again demonstrated that he views the United Nations as a platform for affirming and strengthening his political brand rather than a venue for dialogue and global solutions.
