Threat of using plainclothes officers during Chaharshanbe Suri
The commander of Tehran’s police force warned the people of Iran’s capital that during this year’s Chaharshanbe Suri celebrations, his officers are set to employ government plainclothes agents.
Abbas Ali Mohammadian stated that on Tuesday, starting from 3 PM, police actions and deployments will begin in the streets and neighborhoods of Tehran, and added that the police will take action against those it deems as troublemakers.
He further mentioned that the police will utilize the capacity of mosques and groups he referred to as ‘the people’ during these actions.
Mr. Mohammadian’s reference is to the Basij bases, which operate under the supervision of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps alongside most mosques in Iran. Previously, there have been reports of mosques being used as temporary detention centers for protesters and places where they were tortured.
