The rates of traffic fines have increased between three to five times.
The new rates for traffic fines, whose enforcement was significantly postponed until after the presidential elections, will be implemented nationwide starting Saturday, July 14th.
This news was announced by Mohammad Bagher Salimi, the Deputy of Traffic Operations of the Road and Transportation Police, who claimed that the new table of traffic fines was set with the aim of traffic discipline, preventing risky behaviors, and enhancing driving safety.
Traffic police officials justify the multiple increases in traffic fines by claiming their deterrent effect, without mentioning the government’s budget deficit.
However, experts emphasize that merely increasing traffic fines several times over does not create deterrence in conditions where streets and roads are not up to standard and vehicles lack proper quality. Moreover, according to economic activists, the new rates are set not with the aim of reducing driving risks but rather to financially support the government.
In the new table, the rates of traffic fines have increased between three to five times.
