Trump and Biden head to the Mexico border for a duel
Joe Biden and Donald Trump will both travel to the United States-Mexico border today, Thursday, March 1, 2024, to participate in a high-stakes political duel that could ultimately be decisive for the presidential election in that country.
Last year, 2.5 million illegal immigrants crossed this border, a surge that overwhelmed America’s processing facilities and pushed social services in major U.S. cities to the brink.
For Mr. Biden, today is a valuable opportunity to convince voters that he is serious about immigration, while Mr. Trump’s visit is another chance to focus attention on a topic that has been the main focus of his political career so far.
The national election in November is expected to be a rematch between Biden and Trump, although neither has yet secured their respective party’s nomination.
More than 6.3 million migrants have been apprehended crossing illegally into the U.S. during Mr. Biden’s presidency, a number that exceeds previous presidential terms.
