Trump: I will rescue Afghans stranded in the United Arab Emirates
Donald Trump, the former President of the United States, wrote on his social media platform Truth Social that he will help Afghans who went to the United Arab Emirates and are imprisoned there after the Taliban came to power.
Today, Sunday, July 20, he reposted an article about Afghans stranded in the UAE, writing, ‘I will try to rescue them. I will start right now.’
Mr. Trump referenced a news website report that UAE officials are preparing to hand over some Afghan refugees to the Taliban government.
Reuters news agency says it cannot confirm this report.
Mr. Trump, whose administration adopted an anti-immigration policy, revoked the temporary protected status of thousands of Afghan citizens in the U.S. three months ago.
Under U.S. laws, the government could not deport these citizens.
Temporary protected status is granted to citizens of countries where returning home is deemed unsafe and dangerous due to war, internal unrest, or natural disasters.
In April, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced that the current conditions in Afghanistan no longer warrant U.S. immigration support.
The U.S. State Department has not responded to Reuters’ request for comment on this matter.
The UAE, a security partner of the U.S., agreed in 2021 to temporarily house several thousand Afghan citizens who were evacuated from Kabul with American forces after the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan.
