Trump targets Iran with new tariffs and restrictions by signing a fresh executive order
Donald Trump, the President of the United States, signed a new executive order to counter what is described as threats from the Iranian regime.
In this order, Iran is accused of pursuing nuclear capabilities, supporting terrorism, developing ballistic missiles, and engaging in destabilizing regional activities that, according to Washington, endanger the security of its allies and U.S. interests. The text of the order describes the Islamic Republic as the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism and claims that Tehran supports proxy groups and militias in the Middle East, groups which, according to the U.S., have caused the deaths and injuries of American citizens and forces in their attacks.
The White House released this executive order just hours after the conclusion of indirect talks between Iran and the U.S. in Muscat. The text also states that mismanagement in exploiting Iran’s resources is evident, and the Iranian government, instead of addressing the people’s issues and infrastructure, has spent the country’s resources on nuclear and missile programs while society and infrastructure face serious problems.
In another section of this order, the Islamic Republic is accused of brutally suppressing the people, killing thousands of protesters, and widespread human rights violations, claiming that these actions, along with the spread of extremism, undermine U.S. efforts for peace and stability.
Based on this executive order, the United States can impose additional tariffs on imports from any country that directly or indirectly purchases or receives goods or services from Iran. Additionally, the U.S. President has the authority to amend the provisions of this order in response to changing conditions or retaliatory actions by Iran or other countries.
At the end of this order, it grants the U.S. Secretary of State, the Secretary of Commerce, and the U.S. Trade Representative the authority to develop and implement the necessary regulations and guidelines for the tariff system and other related actions.
