Turkey: Mecca Pact is similar to NATO Article 5 but not against Iran
Hakan Fidan, the Turkish Foreign Minister, stated that the joint defense agreement between Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan is technically similar to NATO’s Article 5 and is based on mutual defense, but it has not been formed against Iran or any other country.
Fidan added that in the event of an attack on one of the members, the three countries will consult on the extent and type of support for the attacked member, and until such an attack occurs, no country will be considered a threat.
According to him, a committee consisting of ministers from the three countries will be formed, and the secretariat of this pact will be based in Saudi Arabia. Fidan also mentioned that Egypt could join this pact after resolving some technical issues.
