The UAE’s permanent representative says banning women from work in Afghanistan violates the UN Security Council resolution.
Lana Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation for Political Affairs and the Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations, has strongly condemned the Taliban’s decision to prohibit women from working in domestic and international non-governmental organizations.
In a statement, she warned that at a time when two-thirds of Afghanistan’s population need humanitarian aid and 6 million people are at risk of starvation, this decision will hinder the delivery of humanitarian assistance and will affect the most vulnerable, including women, children, and the elderly.
She emphasized that this decision, which follows the recent and indefensible Taliban ban on women and girls attending universities, violates UN Security Council Resolution 2615 and will undoubtedly exacerbate humanitarian suffering in Afghanistan.
