UAE Permanent Representative: Banning Women from Working in Afghanistan Violates UN Security Council Resolution

The UAE’s permanent representative says the ban on women’s work in Afghanistan is a violation of a UN Security Council resolution.

Lana Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation for Political Affairs and the United Arab Emirates’ permanent representative to the United Nations, has strongly condemned the Taliban’s decision to prohibit women from working in domestic and international non-governmental organizations.

In a statement, she warned that at a time when two-thirds of Afghanistan’s population needs humanitarian aid and 6 million people are at risk of hunger, this decision will hinder the delivery of humanitarian assistance and affect the most vulnerable, including women, children, and the elderly.

She emphasized that this decision, following the recent and indefensible ban by the Taliban on the presence of women and girls in universities, violates UN Security Council Resolution 2615 and will undoubtedly exacerbate humanitarian suffering in Afghanistan.
