UAE to Allocate $544 Million to Compensate for Last Week's Flood Damages

The UAE will allocate $544 million to compensate for the damages caused by last week’s flood.

The United Arab Emirates announced that it will allocate $544 million to repair the homes of citizens affected by the heavy rain and flood of last week.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai and Prime Minister of the UAE, said on Wednesday, April 25, at the end of the cabinet meeting, that we have learned important lessons in dealing with heavy rains. The cabinet approved two billion dirhams, about $544 million, to repair the damages inflicted on people’s homes.

Due to the heavy rains last week, which were unprecedented in the past 75 years, a large part of Dubai’s streets and highways were submerged, and the operation of its airport, one of the busiest airports in the world, was disrupted for a few days.

Although UAE officials have not yet announced the exact number of casualties, reports indicate that at least three Filipino workers and one Emirati citizen lost their lives due to last week’s severe flooding.
