UN resolution states that Iran’s widespread use of the death penalty is a violation of international commitments
Mai Sato, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights for Iran, announced on Thursday, November 29, that a resolution regarding the human rights situation in the Islamic Republic of Iran was passed in the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly, with 79 votes in favor, 28 against, and 63 abstentions.
Ms. Sato wrote on X that this resolution strongly condemns the alarming and significant increase, as well as the continuous and widespread use of the death penalty by the Islamic Republic of Iran, which violates the country’s international commitments.
Executions based on forced confessions without fair trial and legal due process, carried out secretly or without prior notice to the prisoner’s family or lawyer, are among the issues highlighted in this resolution.
The resolution also includes the issue of cross-border suppression of opponents of the Islamic Republic.
