UNESCO Reports Increase in Violence and Threats Against Environmental Journalists Worldwide

UNESCO, the cultural agency of the United Nations, reported an increase in violence and threats against environmental journalists and reporters from both the private and public sectors.

According to a report by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization released on Thursday, May 3, at least 40 environmental journalists have been killed between 2009 and 2023.

Out of 44 journalists and reporters killed while covering environmental issues, only five cases have resulted in the conviction of the perpetrators.

In just the past five years, 305 attacks on these journalists have been reported.

In Iran, environmental journalists and activists have also been constantly under pressure.
