U.S. Congressman Accused of Corruption and Money Laundering
George Santos, a Republican member of the U.S. Congress, has been charged in a federal indictment with 13 counts, including corruption, money laundering, and theft of public funds.
Mr. Santos, who represents New York, surrendered to the relevant authorities on Wednesday as news of his charges was released.
This 34-year-old Congressman, who began his tenure in the U.S. Congress in January 2023, became controversial from the start due to lies he had included in his biography.
If he is found guilty of these federal charges, he may face a sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
Mr. Santos told the Associated Press on Wednesday that hearing about these charges was new to him.
